Singapore’s E-Waste Recycling Progress

Discover how Singapore is tackling its e-waste challenge through national recycling programs, ALBA collection points, and sustainability initiatives. Learn how Choon Sheng contributes to responsible e-waste management.

What Is E-Waste?

E-waste, or electronic waste, refers to discarded electrical or electronic devices that are no longer functional or desired. This includes items such as computers, smartphones, televisions, and home or office appliances. With rapid technological innovation and frequent upgrades, e-waste has become one of the fastest-growing waste streams worldwide.

Common Examples of E-Waste

  • . Computers, laptops, tablets, and mobile phones
  • . Televisions, monitors, and entertainment systems
  • . Household appliances such as microwaves, refrigerators, and washing machines
  • . Office equipment including printers, copiers, and fax machines
  • . Medical devices, lighting equipment, and electronic tools

Environmental and Health Risks

Improper e-waste disposal poses significant environmental and health threats. When electronic devices are dismantled or burned without proper safety measures, toxic substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium can leach into soil and water or pollute the air. Informal recycling practices expose workers—and often children and pregnant women—to these harmful materials, leading to long-term health risks.

Why Responsible E-Waste Management Matters

Global e-waste generation continues to rise as device lifespans shorten and consumption grows. Despite containing valuable recoverable materials like gold, copper, and aluminum, only a small fraction of e-waste is recycled safely. The rest often ends up in landfills or incinerators, creating both economic and ecological challenges.

In Singapore, e-waste recycling is spearheaded by the National Environment Agency (NEA) in partnership with ALBA E-Waste Smart Recycling, forming a nationwide effort to manage electronic waste sustainably. Singapore generates about 60,000 tonnes of e-waste annually, roughly equivalent to every resident discarding 70 mobile phones a year.

Collection and Recycling Progress

Since the launch of the national e-waste recycling program, over 34,000 tonnes of e-waste have been collected. In 2025 alone, nearly 10,000 tonnes were gathered—a 60% increase compared to 2024.

By mid-2026, all community centres in Singapore will feature dedicated e-waste bins, bringing the total number of collection points to 1,057 islandwide. Residents can locate these points via the ALBA Step Up app, which also rewards users with recycling points.

Key E-Waste Collection Options

  • 1) Public Drop-off Locations: Around 1,000 ALBA e-waste bins for items like batteries, laptops, and small appliances.
  • 2) Free Doorstep Collection: ALBA offers free pick-up for large appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines.
  • 3) Shell Stations: 23 Shell petrol stations now accept small e-waste items through their partnership with ALBA.

Public Awareness and Challenges

While infrastructure has improved significantly, household e-waste recycling rates remain low—only 11% in 2024. The gap largely stems from a lack of awareness and improper disposal habits.

To address this, NEA continues to expand outreach programs like Repair Kopitiam, which teaches residents to repair their devices, and ALBA community collection drives, aimed at increasing public participation.

Sustainability Impact

Proper e-waste recycling supports resource recovery, allowing valuable materials to be reused while preventing toxic pollutants from entering the environment. These efforts align with Singapore’s Zero Waste Masterplan, which targets a 30% reduction in waste sent to Semakau Landfill by 2030.
